The tour starts at Engelberg Abbey’s artisan cheese dairy. From the beginning this is a fairly steep route that climbs steadily along the tarmac Schwandstrasse towards Waldegg and Schwand. The higher you get, the fewer cars you’ll meet. Much of the road between Waldegg and Schwand leads through woodland, so it is well shaded. When you reach Schwand, you may like to take a break at the Schwand restaurant. Here, a beautiful prospect opens up, with panoramic views across to the Titlis. The tarmac road from Spisboden to Bränd via Steghalten contains only uphill sections so you’ll be glad of the support of your e-bike’s motor. Shortly before Ristis you pass the Langenboden pasture and dairy, which you can visit now or save for the return journey. The final section in Ristis leads you around the Ristis-Brunni chairlift and, after a few more metres, up to the Hüttismatt pasture and dairy. You can return to Engelberg along the same route or, alternatively, ride down from Spisboden via Heg, Bergli and Fellenrüti.

Please note that depending on weather conditions (snow conditions) not all alpine cheese dairies are occupied in June.

    Author’s recommendation

Refreshments are available at the Schwand restaurant or at Ristis. The log-built shelter in Spisboden is a great place to stop for a rest and a picnic.
