Fabian Bösch: “As a child, my dream job was to be a sports teacher. I thought early on that it might be something I could do and would like to do. If sport hadn't worked out, that would probably have been my path. Now it's unlikely that I'll study sport, especially because I've been in professional sport for a long time and everything revolves around sport. If I do something else, it would be more as a coach, where I can give my own input through accumulated experience and knowledge.
I originally wanted to be a field hockey player before I started skiing. I used to play field hockey and ski race at the same time. At first I wanted to be a field hockey player, but in field hockey it was difficult to see your own path and assess how good you were compared to the competition. It was hard to know if I had a future in field hockey or if I was just one of many in the midfield who wouldn't make it.
There were clearer development opportunities in skiing. You had opportunities early on at the Migros Grand Prix and could see that you were at the front. There were finer squad gradations from the Obwalden Ski Association to the Central Switzerland Ski Association to national squad levels such as the National Performance Center and the C squad. Year after year, you knew which step you had to take. In contrast, in field hockey you just had to wait until a door opened without knowing when and in which direction that would be.
That's why I decided to go skiing, although I enjoyed field hockey right from the start.”
